From Encyclopediak
Galvani, Gahl vah ne, Luigi 1737-1798, an Italian physician, born at Bologna, Italy. He practiced medicine in his native city until 1762, when he was chosen to the chair of anatomy in Bologna University. His experiments with animals in studying and demonstrating animal electricity and the work that he published on that subject have given him a lasting fame. Because of his refusal to take the oath of allegiance to the Cisalpine Republic he was retired from his professorship, but was recalled within a few months. The Galvanic battery takes its name from Galvani. A complete set of his works was published at Bologna in 1841. See ELECTRIC BATTERY.
