Indian Pipe
From Encyclopediak
Indian Pipe, a leafless plant of the Heath Family, whose stem and flower are of a muddy white color hence it is locally called ghost flower or corpse plant. It is found in the damp woods of the North, at the bases of decaying trees and stumps, upon which it feeds. The stem is fleshy and scaly, growing from three to ten inches in height and bearing a single, drooping, bell-shaped flower which appears in September. Its rarity makes it eagerly sought, but the pleasure lies in finding and not in gathering it, for the whole plant blackens soon after being picked.
