Otway, Thomas

Otway, Thomas 1652-1685, an English dramatist, born in Sussex. After studying at Oxford he became an actor failing in this, he turned to play writing. His two best plays: The Orphan and Venice Preservedare representative of the Restoration tragedy. Otway's plays, in spite of artificial plots, have genuine passion, and he excelled in depicting the pathos of affection. See Drama.
